July 28, 2010 The Great Saskatchewan Mustard Festival: all things mustard in August Source: Saskatchewan Mustard Development Commission From a ‘Celebrity Hot Dog Slider Eating Contest’ to a barbeque and ‘Chef’s Challenge’, all things mustard will be happening in Regina this August. Formerly called the Great Canadian Mustard Festival, the build up to the Great Saskatchewan Mustard Festival gets underway during the first weekend in August when participating restaurants highlight menu offerings with appetizers, entrées and desserts featuring mustard. “The momentum for the Festival this year is really catching on. I expect we will have about 15 restaurants participating in the build up to the Festival and during the activities on Sunday the 8th. We have some new surprises that will appeal to the entire family,” says Festival Chair Greg Hanwell. “While we celebrate the many ways chefs use mustard, we are also celebrating the fact that Saskatchewan is the world’s largest exporter of mustard,” Hanwell added. Saskatchewan produces 75 percent of Canada’s mustard crop, while Western Canada accounts for 65 percent of global mustard export trade. The Festival takes place from 11am-4pm, on Sunday August 8 at The Willow on Wascana. For only $10 patrons can enjoy samples of all the original recipes and vote in the People’s Choice. SMDC General Manager Adele Buettner will, once again serve as one of the three judges in the Chef’s Competition, along with (Executive) Chef Malcolm Craig and Chef Trevor Lavalley of Crave Kitchen and Wine bar. Sponsors include Z99, SMDC, Sysco Food Services, French’s and Nathan’s Famous. Nathan’s has been supporting hot dog eating contests since it was, established in Coney Island, Brooklyn in 1916.
