July 20, 2009 Great Canadian Mustard Festival in Regina, Saskatchewan, July 24 to 26, 2009 Source: Saskatchewan Mustard Development Commission MUSTARD IN ALL ITS GLORY It was a Festival to remember and, now that it is over, it is a Festival to anticipate. The third annual Great Canadian Mustard Festival, which took place in Regina from July 24 to 26, delighted the taste buds of patrons and heightened the profile of this leading Saskatchewan crop. “It was a most enjoyable experience that showcased the many positives developments taking place in our industry. The creativity of our culinary community, the enthusiasm of Festival patrons and, of course, the quality mustard seed from Saskatchewan growers were all evident,” observed Adele Buettner, general manager of SMDC. The Festival commenced on July 24 with chefs from The Abbey, Cathedral Freehouse, Willow on Wascana, Beer Brothers, Crave Kitchen and Zest Restaurant featuring original three-course menus using mustard in appetizers, entrées and desserts. July 25 saw the Brothers Beer Gardens come alive, as patrons witnessed a variety of Chefs’ Demonstrations which gravitated to scrumptious samples for all. The Chef’s Ball on Saturday Night at the Crave Kitchen and Wine Bar was an elegant evening with an array of beautifully presented and tasty entrees. As guests mingled, they enjoyed generous tasty samples with a mustard twist. The Festival culminated on July 26 with the Mustard Gala at the Willow on Wascana. People from across Saskatchewan enjoyed the lovely Wascana Lake setting, while indulging their taste buds with a multitude of mustard flair - barbeque style. After enjoying a variety of dishes including Wild Boar, Cat Fish, curried shrimp, ribs, and many more, Festival patrons helped to select the “People’s Choice”. “It was really a celebration of food creations with mustard as the inspiration. The Saskatchewan Mustard Development Commission is pleased to be affiliated with this Festival, and we look forward to collaborating on the 2010 event,” said Buettner, who served on the Chef’s Challenge Judge Panel, along with Festival Chair Moe Mathieu and Celebrity Chef Malcolm Craig.
